Connected Home Tech to Make Your Home a Smart Home

July 27th, 2017

Smartphones are amazing devices. They allow us to have all the information in the world just a few finger taps away, to quickly share special moments with our friends and family, and more. Amazingly, there are even apps and devices you can use to connect almost every part of your home to your smartphone so you can control virtually everything from anywhere. Smartphones just keep geting smarter all the time!

Before you can use your smartphone to control your home comfort, you first need to have the technology in place on the things you want to control. There are smarthome devices available to control you heating and cooling, lighting, and even your door locks! Here are a few of the essential ones that every homeowner would find helpful:

Smart Thermostats

Available from manufacturers such as NEST, Honeywell, and Ecobee, these thermostats connect to your home WiFi and allow you to adjust the heating or cooling in your home directly from your smartphone. That way, if you forget to turn down your AC or furnace after you leave the house, it just takes a few swipes on your smartphone and you’re all set to make sure your home stays comfortable, and also help avoid wasting energy. These smart devices can even learn your home patterns and your schedule over time, and automatically adjust their programming to save you even more energy in the long run. Talk about smart!

Smart Leak Detectors

Water in the basement is one of the worst fears of any homeowner. Even just a small amount of water can ruin flooring or cause mold to grow. Smart water sensors like those made by Fibaro or Aeotec alert you the moment that water becomes a problem. Some models require only a WiFi connection, while others need to be connected to a smart home hub, like Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings.

Smart Plugs & Switches

Use these handy gadgets to control virtually any electronic device in your home directly from your smartphone. Smart Plugs such as those from Belkin, iDevices or Zuli simply plug in to any outlet in your home and allow you to turn power on or off to any devices plugged in to it at any time right from your smartphone. Some come with power consumption tracking so you know which devices are using the most electricity. There are even models designed for outdoor use, which means controlling your garden lighting or Christmas lights has never been easier.

Smart Locks

It’s never a good feeling when you can’t remember if you locked the front door or not. Smart locks make sure you never have to worry about that again. Smart locks from manufacturers such as August, Kwikset, and Schlage give you options like unlocking with a touch of your finger, and some even allow you to check the status of your doors and lock them no matter where you are.

It’s pretty easy to install these devices, and you’ll soon find that having the added peace of mind from connecting your home to your smartphone is a very nice thing. You’ll never again have to wait until you get home to check and see if the AC is turned on if the day gets hot and muggy, or waste electricity from lights that were left on accidentally.
