The Importance of Regular Furnace Maintenance

The Importance of Regular Furnace Maintenance

November 7th, 2017

Modern furnaces are so quiet and efficient, it’s all too easy to let them become ‘out of sight, out of mind’. However, just because furnaces are now safer and quieter than they used to be, it doesn’t mean that they can be, or should be, ignored. Like any other major appliance in your home, they do require occasional maintenance in order to keep functioning at peak efficiency. Having your furnace inspected and serviced regularly is essential to making sure that your home heating and cooling costs are kept as low as possible. Here are some of the reasons why regular furnace maintenance is so important.

Clean Furnaces are Efficient Furnaces

Just like any other machine, it’s essential to keep your furnace clean and free of dirt and debris in order for it to operate as efficiently as possible. As dirt and dust build up inside your furnace, as well as in the ducts throughout your home, it begins to restrict the movement of air through the system. This restriction of air flow means that the furnace needs to run for a longer period of time in order to move enough air to effectively heat or cool your home, which means your energy costs go up.

Keep Dust and Allergens Under Control

One of the major benefits from having your furnace cleaned regularly is that it helps to keep dust and allergens from circulating throughout your home. While the furnace filter does a great job at capturing and removing the vast majority of dust and contaminants in the air of your home, there will inevitably be a small portion that makes it through in to the furnace and in to the ducts. Over time, these small portions of dust build up and can sometimes shake loose to be recirculated in to the air of your home. Regular cleaning of the interior of your furnace helps to minimize dust build-up.

Identify Potential Problems Early

While modern furnaces do have a much longer lifespan than older designs, they still don’t last forever. This is why having regular inspections and maintenance of your furnace is so critical. If a part begins to show signs of wear, your home comfort expert will call this out so that you can act early and avoid bigger problems further down the road. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so take care of those minor furnace issues before they become major ones.

Repair or Replace?

Sometimes your furnace may look perfectly fine on the outside, but could be corroded or damaged on the inside to the point where it may need to be replaced entirely. In older homes where there have been previous owners, there’s no guarantee that they were as diligent in cleaning and maintaining the furnace as you have been. It may very well be in your best interests to replace the entire furnace if there are multiple parts in need of replacement, or if there is excessive corrosion or damage to the interior parts that simply cannot be repaired. Your home comfort expert will be able to advise you on the best course of action after they have conducted a thorough inspection of your furnace. On the plus side, a new furnace is a great investment in the value of your home, and can make a huge difference in the overall comfort of your living spaces and the cost of your monthly energy bill.
